Mackintosh and Glasgow just go together, yet you don’t get to see the House for an Art Lover on a normal city tour. It’s located further out in Bellahouston Park, close to the Ibrox Stadium.
I only recently managed to take a full day to explore the house and park, also taking my camera. In the past I have been to meetings in the house and unfortunately never thought about actually snapping some photos.
As a lover of Art Nouveau, I have been to the house a couple of times and love going back now and then. It reminds me of Darmstadt, the German centre of Art Nouveau, which is close to my home town. This doesn’t come as a surprise though, initially the house was an entry for a competition for an addition to Darmstadt’s Mathildenhöhe – the place where Darmstadt’s artists’ colony of the same name lived and worked.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret MacDonald didn’t see the house in their life, it was only built in the early 90s and should thus be seen as an interpretation of the initial competition entry.

The houses purpose today is not just to showcase Mackintosh’s work but also to promote many aspects of art. The cafe showcases artworks and there is a large number of workshops as well as additional exhibitions to choose from. I can really recommend a visit and a stop at the Art Lover’s Cafe afterwards.
Do you love Art Nouveau as much as me?
See you around,
